Africa will soon have claim to one of the longest monorails in the world. At nearly 60 miles long the Cairo Monorail will equal (if not surpass) China's Chongqing monorail (currently the world's longest).
Egypt's first monorail system will be composed of two lines connecting the Cairo metropolitan area with the New Administrative Capital and the 6th of October City.
Line | Total Length (mi/km) | # of Stations | Total route time | Status |
---|---|---|---|---|
New Administrative City / East Cairo | 33/54 | 22 | 1 hour | UNDER CONSTRUCTION |
6th of October City / Giza | 26/42 | 12 | 42 min. | UNDER CONSTRUCTION |
The Cairo Monorail will run 70 fully automated Alstom Innova monorail trains (as used in Sao Paulo and Las Vegas).
Construction is well underway, and the system is expected to open in 2023.
